Catch Reports
I have been fishing for CARP for over 20 years now and I enjoy the annual pilgrimage to France. Like most people I have fished numerous venues in France and have had a varying degree of success and frustration.
However in my opinion the perfect venue has now been found.
There is a lake called Etang Des Landes this is set in the heart of rural France yet only a 30 minute drive from the City of Le Mans. The lake is approximately 4 hours drive from Calais. The route is simple and almost entirely Autoroute including the new southern section of the A28 from Rouen, the journey is effortless with some breathtaking scenery to take in.
The lake is stream fed and approx 5 acres in size, on a 10acre site. Depths range from 3 – 12 feet with a maximum of 5 anglers allowed. The number of swims has been restricted in order to ensure ample room for everyone and the formula appears to be working successfully. There is an impressive existing stock, which has been enhanced with the addition 4 years ago of a large number of quality Carp from the famous Maurepaire fishery. This stocking included 3x 40lbs and 15x 30lb fish with many of the 20’s being in excess of 25lb.
Self-catering anglers are welcome with the village shop close by and in addition a super market just a ten-minute drive away.
That said you have to sample Mary’s cooking and for just 18 euros per day, you will get a full English breakfast and a full two course evening meal.
Snacks, crisps, chocolate, water, wine and beer are provided at very reasonable prices indeed.
There are proper toilet facilities and a state of the art power shower (Its fantastic); anglers have access to a ‘Carp Room’ with fridge, freezer, kettle, power and a table and chairs to use. Basic accommodation is also available if required.
Paul and Mary cannot do enough to help as they live on site. That said, they are very much in the background, so to speak and do not intrude. They are quite frankly the perfect hosts.
I have personally fished the venue three times now, it has been fished properly for three seasons now and average catch weights are increasing rapidly. Last season there were 14 - 40lb+ captures and this is 5 or 6 different fish over 40lb. The fish appear to be gaining weight at about 3lb-6lb per season. The lake record recorded in August 2007 stands at 48lbs caught by Dennis Wilkinson. This season is eagerly anticipated as more 40’s are expected and who knows that magic 50lb barrier is not far away.
I fished a week in September 2006 with a friend and between us we had 45 runs landing 37 Fish including 2x 40lb 15x 30lb 17x 20lb most of which were in excess of 25lb and just 3 fish under 20lb. Our average catch weight was just under 29lb.
